Australia's Department of Health has reported 8 new cases of the new coronavirus in Sydney, bringing the number of cases in the north of the city to 90.

More than 44,000 mers-coV tests have been conducted in the past 24 hours in the city's home state of New South Wales, and State Government Chief Gladys Berejiklian said authorities were monitoring the situation around the clock, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on Tuesday.

The focus emerged last week after a beach party in Sydney, while state Health Minister Brad Hazzard suggested that "Patient Zero" was someone who came to Sydney from Los Angeles on December 1.
