Omani state television announced, on Saturday, the inauguration of Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Sultan of Oman, to succeed Sultan Qaboos, who died Friday evening.

The Supreme Defense Council of the Sultanate of Oman had called on Saturday the Council of the Royal Family to convene to determine who to transfer the rule of rule in the country after the death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

The Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Saeed, died on Friday evening, at the age of 79, according to what the official Omani News Agency quoted the Royal Court as saying.

Sultan Qaboos has ruled the Sultanate of Oman since he assumed power in 1970, when he had no children and no successor was announced.

The Basic Law of the Sultanate of Oman, which was established in 1996, says that the ruling family chooses a successor within 3 days of the throne being vacated.

And if the ruling family does not reach an agreement, a council that includes military and security officials, heads of the Supreme Court and the presidents of the State and Shura Councils shall announce the assumption of the person whose name the Sultan has secretly named in a closed letter ruling in the Sultanate.
