Omani Heritage and Culture Minister Haitham bin Tariq Saturday took the oath after his appointment as Sultan of Oman to succeed his late cousin Qaboos bin Saeed, who died Friday evening at the age of 79.
And the Omani government announced in a tweet on Saturday morning that "His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said, may God preserve him, takes oath as the Sultan of the country (...) following the convening of the royal family council and its report confirming who was recommended by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Saeed."
The Sultan’s public television commentator indicated that the royal family had decided to open a letter left by the late Sultan and specified the name of his successor.
According to the constitution, the royal family’s council can, within three days of the Sultan’s position becoming vacant, determine who will rule.
The new sultan, Haitham bin Tariq (65 years old), a sports fanatic, took over as Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, before becoming Minister of Heritage and Culture in the 1990s.
